Daylight Saving Time FAQ

Updated by Leigh Hutchens

Daylight Saving Time (DST) can be confusing, so we've put together a list of frequently asked questions to help.

Q: What is Daylight Saving Time?

A: Daylight Saving Time, also referred to as daylight savings time or simply daylight time (United States, Canada, and Australia) and summer time (United Kingdom, European Union, and others), is the practice of advancing clocks (typically by one hour) during warmer months so that darkness falls at a later clock time.

The typical implementation of DST is to set clocks forward by one hour in the spring ("spring forward") and to set clocks back by one hour in autumn ("fall back") to return to standard time. As a result, there is one 23-hour day in late winter or early spring and one 25-hour day in autumn.

Q: What's the difference between summer daylight savings time and winter daylight savings time?

A: Summer DST begins on the last Sunday of March, at 03:00 (this is for Central European time, and will vary on your time zone settings for your unit), and the clock is moved forward one hour.

Contrary to summer time where one hour is removed, during winter time, an hour is added. As a consequence of this, any shifts or punches that overlap 02:00 - 03:00 during the last Sunday in October (this is for Central European time and will vary on your time zone settings for your unit) will automatically have one extra hour added to them.

Q: Does my future schedule show the proper time?

A: Quinyx takes daylight saving time into account and will show the correct time on future schedules.

Q: What happens if I punch out just after midnight? Will I lose an hour of pay?

A: No, you won't lose an hour of pay.

Q: Does Quinyx offer reminders that the time is changing?

A: Quinyx doesn't currently offer advance reminders that Daylight Savings Time is approaching.

Q: When sending forecast data via the REST API, do any timestamp adjustments need to be made to allow for DST / daylight saving?

A: Yes, they do.

Q: During winter, will my schedule for my employees automatically increase an hour?

A: Yes. Example: an employee is working between 01:00 - 08:00. On any other day, this is counted as 7 hours, but during the night of the winter time change, it’s counted as 8 hours.

Q: During summer, will my schedule for my employees automatically decrease an hour?

A: Yes. For example, on the last Sunday of March, at 03:00 (this is for Central European time and will vary on your time zone settings for your unit, the clock is moved forward one hour. Due to this, any employee with an active time punch overlapping the DST change (02:00 and 03:00) will have 1 hour removed from their total shift - or punch time.

Q: Are there exceptions?

Any punches that start between 02:00 - 03:00 (during the DST change), Quinyx will count as per usual, e.g., start time minus end time.

Example: A punch-in that happens at 02:30 - 05:30 will be considered as 3 hours. This is due to Quinyx seeing all punches between 02:00 - 03:00 as the "2nd" occurrence of 02:00 - 03:00 during the DST change.

Q: Is base schedule affected?

The base schedule is devoid of dates, and DST (logic) depends on dates, so any logic that applies in the schedule also applies in the base schedule.
